Castles

San Marino
San Marino is a mountainous microstate surrounded by north-central Italy. Among the world’s oldest republics, it retains much of its historic architecture. On the slopes of Monte Titano sits the capital, also called San Marino, known for its medieval walled old town and narrow cobblestone streets. The Three Towers, castlelike citadels dating to the 11th century, sit atop Titano’s neighboring peaks.

The Gradara Castle is a medieval fortress that is located in the town of Gradara, Marche, in Italy. It is protected by two walls, the outermost of which extends for almost 800 meters, making it the imposing structure. Particularly striking is the view of the fortress and the underlying historical village at night. The castle is one of the most visited monuments in the region and is the scene of museum events, musical and artistic. Gradara was, by geographical position, since ancient times a crossroads of traffic and people: during the Middle Ages the fortress was one of the main theaters of clashes between militias loyal to the papacy and the turbulent families Romagna and Marche. Situated at 142 metres above sea level, with the Republic of San Marino, Rimini and Carpegna in the background, Gradara represents an extraordinary urban and architectural combination. Legend has it that the castle was the scene of the famous and tragic love story of Paolo and Francesca, caught in each other's arms and killed by Gianciotto, Francesca's husband. This love story was immortalized by Dante in his Divine Comedy. The Gradara Castle dates back to the period between 11th and 15th centuries. Its history is inextricably linked with the infamous feuds between the Malatesta and Montefeltro families. This long-standing conflict came to a halt only after the control of the castle fell into the hands of the Sforza family. It was Dante, however, who intervened with his Divine Comedy, making the castle the locale for the tale of Paolo and Francesca and thus turning the castle forever into a symbol of love.
San Leo
FORTRESS OF SAN LEO The Fortress of San Leo in the heart of Romagna is at the top of a village with less than 3,000 inhabitants, which absolutely deserves to be visited! The impregnable stronghold hosts and collects various exhibitions related to its great and important history: from the collection of weapons dating back to 1500 to those of the First and Second World Wars; from instruments of torture to the replica of Vasari's fresco representing the taking of San Leo by the Medici family up to exhibitions of contemporary works. The Fortress of San Leo is linked above all to the life of the famous magician and alchemist Giuseppe Balsamo, Count of Cagliostro , mysterious and enigmatic "guest" of his prisons, that after having lived in the most important courts of Europe, from London to St. Petersburg, where it was possible for him to make friends with prominent personalities such as Schiller and Goethe, he ended his existence in the impregnable Fortress of San Leo, pardoned by Pope Pius VI, after being sentenced to death by a harsh trial in 1790 for heresy and seditious activities. Following the public renunciation of the principles of the professed doctrine, the death sentence was in fact commuted to life imprisonment, to be served in the gloomy prisons of the inaccessible fortress. The cell specially built for him is called the " cagliostrina " or "cockpit cell": a trap door with a single opening in the ceiling, of 2 square meters, with a single air point represented by a window. The fort also houses the museum of torture instruments, including the garrote, the stretch bench, the confessional chairs. The stronghold also houses the replica of Vasari's fresco representing the taking of San Leo by the Medici family at exhibitions of contemporary works. Today the Rocca, cleaned of the nineteenth-century superstructures that altered its elegant Renaissance lines, has returned to its architectural splendor which makes it one of the most celebrated testimonies of military art, in a setting of history and art among the most beautiful in Italy.

Urbino is a walled city in central Italy. It's known for the turreted, 15th-century Palazzo Ducale. Inside the palace, the National Gallery of the Marche features paintings by Titian and Raphael, who was born in Urbino. Raphael’s House has more paintings, including ones by the artist’s father. Next to the neoclassical cathedral is the Museo Diocesano Albani, with religious artifacts dating back to the 13th century.

The Grotte di Frasassi are an extraordinary series of underground caves which extend for 35km, and form the largest underground cave system in Europe. This subterranean world of calcareous rock formations dates back 180 million years! These incredible caves were first opened to the public in 1974 and have since been visited by over ten million people. The temperature inside is 14C but there is 90 percent humidity so it doesn’t feel cold. On a hot summer day it can be a welcome relief to plunge into this strange, beautiful subterranean world. The tour through the network of caverns is about an hour of easy walking along a maze of pathways. Magnificent ‘rooms’ revealing nature’s masterpieces have picturesque names: The majestic Ancona Abyss, The Infinite Hall, The Hall of Candles, The Obelisk and The Emerald Lake. Small sparkling lakes and pools of clear still water, extravagantly elaborate stalactites, towering columns and alabaster spears adorn these caverns. The caves are further enhanced by the skilled use of soft theatrical lighting. One and a half km of this crystalline wonderland is open to the general public. It also includes the breath-taking Grotta Grande del Vento (The Great Cave of the Wind), Europe's largest single cavern. There are guided tours available in Italian, English, French, Spanish or German. The English guides are excellent and very informative, helping visitors by pointing out with a torch the natural sculptures in the rock formations which visitors might otherwise miss. A visit to the magical world of the Grotte di Frasassi is a memorable and awe-inspiring experience. Both adults and children will be fascinated by this extraordinary, hidden, enchanting world.

The karst complex of Onferno is considered among the most important in Italy among the gypsum caves. Dug by the waters of a stream, which over the course of millennia has made its way through the rock, the caves of Onferno open at the base of the large and unique chalky boulder on which the "Castrum Inferni" once stood. The cave has a development of about 400 m. with an altitude difference of 64 m. and one of its characteristics is represented by the presence of conspicuous colonies of bats (over 8000 specimens). Along the way there are rooms of different sizes, some very large, others smaller and full of creations. The most famous part of the cave is the Sala Quirina, also known as the Sala dei Mammelloni for the large conical chalk protuberances that protrude from the ceiling. These mamelons, spectacular in size and number. The territory of the Reserve has quite peculiar characteristics, and not only thanks to the presence of karst caves of great scientific, naturalistic and spectacular interest, but also for the flora, typical of higher altitudes, which grows due to the presence and influence of Caves that have a constant temperature throughout the year of about 12/13 degrees.Within the 123 hectares of the Reserve there are a series of nature trails of different length and degree of difficulty but always of the same beauty.

MASERATI FACTORY was founded in Bologna in 1914 and moved to its current headquarters in Modena in 1937, a short walk from the historic center and the Enzo Ferrari Museum. It was December 1, 1914 in Bologna that Maserati Brothers founded Maserati, a brand destined to go down in motoring history. Since then, Maserati has played an important role in the history of sports car culture and its development. Over a century of activity has led to glorious results, both on the road and on the track, in addition to more challenging times, which have helped to forge the character and personality of the company. Maserati is now a global brand that operates in over 70 markets. It was the Fountain of the City of Neptune that inspired the Maserati Trident logo, which symbolizes both Bologna itself and the car brand. Inseparably linked to the brand, Trident underlines the exclusive status of company cars and their identity as masterpieces of elegance, luxury and sports performance.

The Museo Enzo Ferrari immerses visitors in the Enzo Ferrari story through the cars and engines that have made motorsport, film and social history. When visitors cross the threshold of the futuristic 2,500 sqm pavilion that wraps around the house in which Enzo Ferrari was born, they feel they have entered a time machine that whisks them off on a unique and enthralling journey. They are surrounded by multiscreen immersive film footage detailing the story of our ingenious founder, our fleet of dream cars and a display of iconic engines in our Museum of Engines located in the space that housed Enzo’s father, Alfredo’s former workshop in the late 19th century.

The Museum Lamborghini in Sant’Agata Bolognese is an automobile museum owned by famous Italian sports car manufacturer Lamborghini. Opened in 2011 and renovated in 2016, the museum is located in the village of Sant’Agata Bolognese, about 30 kilometers / 19 miles north-west of Bologna, northern Italy. The museum is adjacent to the headquarters of Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A, a world-renowned Italian car brand currently part of the Volkswagen / Audi group. On two levels, the museum’s permanent exhibition presents Lamborghini’s history and a selection of sports cars produced by the automaker from the 1960s to the present, displayed on a rotating basis. The first part of the exhibition focuses the early history of the factory founded in 1963 by industrialist Ferruccio Lamborghini with the aim to create luxury sports cars which could compete with Ferrari’s, as well on as some iconic models of the time, such as the 350 GT (1964) and the Miura (1966). The second part features a selection of Lamborghini’s famous models, such as Countach (1974), Diablo (1990), Murciélago (2001), Gallardo (2003), Sesto Elemento (2012), and Huracán (2014). For those who don’t know it, all Lamborghinis are traditionally named after bull breeds or other elements of Spanish bullfighting. The section also feature the only Formula One car made completely by Lamborghini, the 1991 Lambo 291. A third part of the exhibition illustrates various technological achievements related to the development of Lamborghini’s automobiles, such as 4-wheel drive, aluminum and carbon fiber chassis, and hybrid engines. The fourth section features the various V8, v10 and V12 engines adopted by the Bolognese automaker. Finally, the last part of the permanent exhibition presents the latest car models produced by Lamborghini (the Ursus SUV in 2018, for example). Along with the museum, the public can also visit the adjacent Lamborghini factory and automobile assembly line (visits must be booked in advance).

DUCATI MUSEUM is integrated in the DUCATI FACTORY where they still born today the bikes most beautiful in the world. The Ducati Factory was built in 1935 and the Ducati Museum opened on June 12, 1998, during the first annual WDW (World Ducati Week), and was officially inaugurated on October 16th later that year. The Museum preserve over half a century of Ducati racing history and the history of the company (before it produced motorcycles) founded by the Ducati brothers in 1926: over fifty years of Ducati's evolution from a small electrical company to a motorcycling giant. The great moments of the Ducati past are recounted using a variety of Ducati racing motorcycles, images, memorabilia and componentry.

The Marco Simoncelli Museum in Coriano, the birthplace of the Italian pilot. The Musium was founded in December 2012 and it is both a museum & gallery. representing a journey to discover the deeds of one of the most loved motorcycle riders, Marco Simoncelli (also known as Sic or SuperSIC, from the abbreviation of his name on the boards displayed by the box during races. The gallery shows everyone the history of the champion and his life out of racing as well as the bike, the helmets, the suits and all that was his race clothes along with the personal effects that belonged to him. Outside the Museum, where the hills of Romagna gently slope down towards the Adriatic sea, there is the monument dedicated to Marco Simoncelli. It has the form of a muffler which sets the air on fire for 58 seconds every Sunday: 58 seconds of gas, that sounds like and brings to mind the races, In memory of Marco Simoncelli, in 2012 the Misano Circuit, which is close to the village of Coriano, was renamed to commemorate the pilot, who accidentally died in 2011 while he was running on the Malesia GP.
